We recently attended the ege Carpets event with Sn\u00f8hetta at IDX Munich and got a pretty fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the new Matter collection \u2014 and above all, a chance to hear just how much more can go into a carpet when you approach it beyond traditional thinking.<\/p>\n\n

Because that’s exactly what sets Matter apart.<\/p>\n\n

It’s not about designing a pattern that simply looks good or tiles well.It’s about developing a surface that behaves like a system.And that begins not in the material, but in the code.<\/p>\n\n

From Code to Carpet<\/h2>\n\n

Sn\u00f8hetta developed Matter through a generative design process.That means: the design wasn’t drawn \u2014 it was computed.<\/p>\n\n

Truly digital from the ground up \u2014 long before generative AI was even a thing. The code came first.The material came after. <\/p>\n\n

The process behind it can be summed up pretty well:<\/p>\n\n

“From code to pixel, pixel to thread, thread to carpet.”<\/p>\n\n

What’s fascinating about this:The decisions happen at the smallest level \u2014 the pixel \u2014 and ultimately influence the entire surface.<\/p>\n\n

Or put another way:Many small decisions ultimately make the space.<\/p>\n\n

Natural Randomness \u2014 why chance makes sense here<\/h3>\n\n

At the heart of the collection lies the principle of “natural randomness.”<\/p>\n\n

The idea that randomness doesn’t have to be chaotic \u2014 it has its own logic.<\/p>\n\n

When you look at natural systems \u2014 growth, erosion, minerals \u2014 you see exactly that: no repetition, yet a clear structure throughout.<\/p>\n\n

That’s precisely the principle translated into Matter.<\/p>\n\n

The surface has no classic repeat. No visible repetition.And yet it feels calm. <\/p>\n\n

That’s probably the hardest part \u2014 and here it works.<\/p>\n\n

Surface instead of pattern<\/h3>\n\n

What strikes you immediately about Matter: it doesn’t work like a classic design.<\/p>\n\n

From a distance, the surface appears almost monochromatic. Very calm, almost self-evident. <\/p>\n\n

Only when you get closer do you see the depth: subtle color shifts, minimal directional changes, fine textures.<\/p>\n\n

The surface constantly shifts \u2014 but so subtly that it never becomes restless.<\/p>\n\n

This isn’t a pattern seeking attention. Rather, it’s a textile landscape that works in the background. <\/p>\n\n

The color palette \u2014 quiet, but extremely powerful<\/h3>\n\n

One point that really stuck during the launch was the color palette.<\/p>\n\n

Matter works with two clear directions:<\/p>\n\n

a quieter palette of beige and gray tonesand a second layer with blue and green tones<\/p>\n\n

A total of 18 colors each, finely coordinated with one another.<\/p>\n\n

What’s interesting about this:<\/p>\n\n

The colors don’t work in isolation \u2014 they function within the space.Depending on light, materials, and surroundings, the surface’s effect changes.<\/p>\n\n

At the event, we also got to look more closely at the differences between the carpets in light.<\/p>\n\n

Material & Implementation with ege Carpets<\/h3>\n\n

The idea is one thing \u2014 the execution is another.<\/p>\n\n

And that’s exactly where ege Carpets comes in.<\/p>\n\n

Matter is realized as a flatwoven collection,with a very precise, dense loop structure.<\/p>\n\n

This ensures that the surface: is robust enough for large projectswhile simultaneously appearing calm and high-quality.<\/p>\n\n

Available as tiles, by the yard, or as rugs \u2014 flexible for any application.<\/p>\n\n

And that’s important: the product doesn’t just work as a concept \u2014 it also works in real projects.<\/p>\n\n

Sn\u00f8hetta \u2014 why it’s designed this way<\/h2>\n\n

Behind Matter are several years of development \u2014 in the concept, the code, the color, and the technical execution. And you can tell. <\/p>\n\n

It’s not a product that came together quickly \u2014 it’s one that was truly carefully considered.<\/p>\n\n

Above all, the combination of: digital approach, textile execution, and this calm yet never boring surface. makes it something special. <\/p>\n\n
